Convair YB-60 - Biggest Jet Bomber (1952)
The Convair YB-60 was a prototype long range jet powered strategic bomber developed for the USAF.
It was competing against the Boeing B-52 Stratofortress and was larger and could carry a heavier bomb load.
Boeing got their B-52 into the air three days before Convair could get their YB-60 airborne.
The YB-60 was slower than the B-52 by approximately 160 kph (100 mph) and was hampered with severe handling problems.
The USAF opted to purchase the Boeing B-52 aircraft and Convair ceased YB-60 development on 20 January 1953.
